PE Backed Multi Site Group | NW (HQ)
The Challenge
This client was a UK manufacturing business headquartered in the NW, with a critical operational site based in the Lake District. They required an on-site Finance Controller to take ownership of the site, partner closely with operations, and help drive performance in a manufacturing environment whilst being close enough to HQ. The role was widely recognised as challenging. The business had previously recruited into the position, but the appointment had not worked out. This, combined with the remote location and limited local candidate pool, meant the leadership team were understandably cautious and keen to get the next hire right. They needed a Site Controller who not only had strong technical capability, but who truly understood manufacturing including working on site, engaging with production teams, and operating in a hands-on environment.
The Approach
Given the complexity and sensitivity of the role, a retained search approach was agreed. Regular weekly update meetings were scheduled to ensure transparency, momentum, and shared understanding throughout the process. The search was deliberately broad and creative.
It included:
- Local candidates within the Lake District
- Finance professionals within realistic commuting distance
- Targeted headhunting of individuals already working in manufacturing environments
- Detailed market mapping of manufacturing businesses in the region to identify relevant, approachable talent.
Through extensive networking and direct outreach, a longlist of suitable profiles was developed. During this process, a highly experienced manufacturing finance professional was recommended via our network. The candidate had deep sector experience and, importantly, was personally motivated by the opportunity and willing to commit to a hybrid pattern of three days on site and two days from home.
The Result
Three candidates progressed to first-stage interviews, with two moving through to second stage, which included formal presentations. One candidate was appointed. The successful Finance Controller has since settled well into the role and is very happy, bringing the right balance of manufacturing expertise, leadership presence, and on-site engagement to drive the site forward.
Summary
This assignment highlights the value of a retained, relationship-led search for hard-to-fill manufacturing finance roles. By combining honest market insight, structured communication, and extensive networking, Hawthorn One was able to deliver a successful outcome in a location and role where the available talent pool was extremely limited. The result was a confident appointment into a critical site leadership role delivered through persistence, trust, and a deep understanding of what manufacturing finance leadership really looks like on the ground.
