The Brief
Our client required a part-time Purchase Ledger Clerk to support their manufacturing finance function on a 30-hour-per-week basis. The role was registered shortly before Christmas, a period which is traditionally challenging for transactional recruitment due to reduced candidate availability and extended notice considerations. There was a risk that proceeding immediately would limit the quality of the candidate pool, result in rushed decision-making, and ultimately waste time for both the business and potential candidates.
The Approach
Rather than pushing forward at an inopportune time, clear and honest guidance was provided around market conditions and candidate behaviour during the pre-Christmas period. It was agreed that a short pause would allow access to a stronger, more engaged candidate pool in January, increasing the likelihood of a first-time hire. The search was launched immediately upon return in the New Year, with a targeted and proactive approach focused on candidates seeking part-time opportunities within a manufacturing environment.
The Result
The role was successfully filled within four days of restarting the search in January. A suitable shortlist was delivered quickly, interviews were completed efficiently, and the successful candidate was appointed without delay. By timing the search correctly and maintaining focus on quality rather than speed alone, the business secured the right individual quickly and with minimal disruption to the finance function. This appointment marked the second successful placement made into the business through a successful appointment previously.

This assignment highlights the value of honest market insight and timing in recruitment. By advising the client when not to recruit, as well as when to act we ensured a faster, more effective outcome and avoided unnecessary delays, mis use of time or compromise on quality.
